Members of the SBTC recently had the opportunity to meet, and tour the Southern Berkshires with one of the country's top broadband architect/engineers, Dr. Andrew Cohill, of Design Nine. Much information was gleaned that will facilitate the first steps of the complex task of planning and building a future-proof, regional last-mile fiber network in our region. On October 25th, representatives from the SBTC met with State Telecommunications Commissioner Sharon Gillett to emphasize the importance of enabling broadband for all citizens of the Berkshires; forward our nominee for the MBI board; discuss appropriate technologies; and offer our resources to support her office and the MBI in achieving the rollout of broadband infrastructure in the towns represented by the SBTC.

On August 5th, in Great Barrington, SBTC committee members presented Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick with a signed and ratified copy of an agreement between the Towns of the Southern Berkshires to create the Southern Berkshire Technology Committee. The letter outlined the importance of broadband access to the long-term vitality of the region and also voiced the SBTC’s intent to play an important and constructive role working with the Massachusetts Broadband Institute and other parties to develop a technologically robust plan for bringing broadband to the Commonwealth’s under-served towns with all due speed.
